Drop in new van sales in January 2018

Drop in new van sales in January 2018

The Society of Motor Manufacturing and Traders (SMMT) recently reported a drop in new light commercial vehicle sales year-on-year down 4.2% to 20,475 units in January 2018.

A turbulent and uncertain political and economic climate has meant this sales downturn isn't out of the ordinary according to SMMT boss Mike Hawes.

The sharpest decline came in the small van segment dropping by 28.9% to 1,482 registrations, this segment covers car-derived and compact vans weighing up to 2.0 tonnes.

The 2.5 to 3.5-tonne weight range saw a sales dip of just 1.8% to 12,392, covering medium and large vans, while the pick-up sector dropped by 2.3% to 3,359 when compared to the same month in 2017. The niche 4x4 van segment dropped 33% having only registered 36 vehicles in January 2018.

The only category to see a rise in sales during January was the 2.0 to 2.5-tonne weight bracket, covering light vans, up by a marginal 1.2% to 3,206 units.

The top 10 best sellers in January 2018 were:
